Brief us about the company, what inspired you to start Safetyline Jalousie?
SMR Designs Pty Ltd is authorised to manufacture and distribute Safetyline Jalousie louvre windows throughout Australia and the South Pacific as a proudly Australian, family-owned and operated company.
The business has expanded over the past ten years from a tiny 60 m2 manufacturing with five employees to a 2 500 m2 facility with more than fifty employees, with its headquarters in Sydney and offices in Brisbane and Melbourne.
Safetyline Jalousie, a company run by brothers Leigh and Nathan Rust, was founded in Australia in 2009 and quickly rose to the top of the market for high-performance louvre window systems.
The co-founding directors’ father’s prosperous manufacturing and installation firm provided them with early exposure to business and the building sector (Vergola NSW). The brothers were initially discouraged from staying in the family business after graduating from school in favour of pursuing their own careers.
After some time had passed, Leigh and Nathan eventually joined their father at Vergola. They worked their way up the corporate ladder from the factory floor to manufacturing to sales and managerial roles. The siblings decided to start their own business after working together for ten years, naming it Safetyline Jalousie.

Family values, along with the company’s values and standards have contributed greatly to Safetyline Jalousie’s success. SMR Designs P/L employs a diverse team of passionate and professional individuals that drive quality and innovation and work with clients to make a positive contribution to the built environment.
We’re proud to still have a number of key employees who have worked with the company since our foundation. We’re also proud of our cultural diversity and an incredible team of females working within the administrative and manufacturing areas of our business.
What are the key achievements of your business journey?
Receiving a Silver Stevie Award for Product Innovation, winning the Australian Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Manufacturing in 2019, being named to the Top 100 Young Entrepreneurs of Australia list four times in a row, and receiving recognition abroad.
As finalists for the Australian Financial Review’s Most Innovative Companies in 2020, we were also acknowledged.
Being a parent of three and the expectant father of our fourth kid makes me the happiest personally. The greatest accomplishment of my life has undoubtedly been juggling parenting and business; my family is vital to me and will always come first.
